You notice the drooling more and you baby wants to chew on everything that comes near their mouth. You call Mom - she  immediately knows what’s wrong- your precious baby is cutting their first tooth! Oh boy teeth!  While it is exciting to see a babies first tooth- it can be uncomfortable for baby and parents as some babies sleeping and eating patterns are disrupted and that makes for a cranky baby.

There are some things that parents can do to ease the teething process:

  • To prevent rashes from developing wipe your baby’s face often to remove the drool  that  burp cloth   that your best friend gave you in the unique baby shower  gift will really come in handy at this time.
  • It’s okay to give your baby something to chew on-  Rubber teething rings are good-avoid the ones filled with liquid as these can break.
  • A wet wash cloth that has been in the freeze for 30 minutes is a quick fix -just wash the cloth after each use.
  • When using teething rings make sure you take it out of the freezer before it gets rock hard it could bruise already tender and swollen gums.
  • With a clean finger rub your baby’s gums

Read to Your Baby

Reading can be fun for both parents and baby. And you don’t need any special training; only you, your baby, and a book. Reading aloud for only a few minutes at a time is perfect. However, it should be done often. You don’t even have to try to read the entire book in one sitting; just concentrate on the pages - and pictures - you and your baby enjoy.Once you read to your baby, you and he will want to do it everyday. You’ll find pleasure in cuddling your baby in his own personalized blanket, and you’ll also be setting a routine, making life less stressful. An added benefit will be that your baby will be more willing to cooperate when it’s time to nap or sleep.

Don’t be surprised that as your baby grows, he’ll want you to read to him at other times in the day. If you keep a few books with you in the diaper bag, you can read to him while waiting in the doctor’s office and while standing in line at the grocery store.

So, here we go . . . “Once upon a time . . .”

Healthy Sun Fun

Summertime can be a hazardous to babies and toddlers if parents aren’t careful. Here are a few tips we found that can help you and your baby have a healthy and fun time this summer

Babies under six months of age should stay out of the sun.  All young children should be dressed  in lightweight clothing - a tight cotton weave is an excellent choice. Long pants, long sleeved shirts and brimmed hats that shade the neck and face. Have them wear sunglasses that block 99%-100% of ultraviolet rays- most babies/toddlers will wear them, especially if they see you wear them.

Sunscreen can be used but make sure you follow the recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics.  When using a sunscreen for the first time on your baby/toddler, do a skin test and check for a reaction. Call your doctor if your baby is under one year old and suffers a sunburn this is serious and needs medical attention.

Make sure that  your baby/toddler stays hydrated. This means making sure they drink fluids before they begin an outdoor activity and while they are playing, young children should drink 5 ounces of cool tap water or  a flavored sports drink every 20 minutes. Keep plenty of fluids on hand  and sunscreen in a baby tote basket and keep this close by so you can keep your baby/toddler safe in the sun.

So remember- keep babies and toddlers out of the sun as much as possible, use caution when using a sunscreen, keep babies and toddlers covered up in tight weave cotton clothes, brimmed hats and sunglasses. Use extra sun protection when near water and sand.

Decline in Baby Boys Born

Their numbers are falling. The change is small , but real. In the U.S., the number of baby boys born vs. the number of baby girls born has been declining since 1970, which means that 17 fewer males were born for every 10,000 births that occurred between 1970 and 2002, according to a study last year in Environmental Health Perspectives. Which would explain why baby girl gifts sales are higher  than that of  sales for baby boy gifts.

Although more boys are being born than girls in most places, their numbers are falling, and no one is sure why. Some experts think that this shift is all a part of a natural cycle in the dynamics of population. While others think that a change is under way, governed by factors such as changes in the environment, the different types of stresses we’re exposed to like economic hardship, natural disasters like earthquakes and floods- a finding that is well documented in scientific literature.
