“Johnny doesn’t like meat and  veggies any more, all he wants to eat is fruit and bread, he used to eat meats and veggies” laments a worried mom to her pediatrician.  The pediatrician tell her  not to worry toddlers go through phases of being “picky eaters”.

Yes your toddler may only eat a little bit of food, but still has lot’s of energy. That is because between the ages of one and five years old,  an appetite slump happens, your toddler is growing at a much slower pace and they don’t need as many calories. They eat what their brains tell them to eat and when to eat.

Consider this - is  your toddler really eating a small amount of food?  You may be basing their eating habits on your own eating habits. Most adults eat by the clock, out of boredom, or for emotional reasons.  Your toddler is still in tune with is body’s hunger cues,  and will he’ll eat when he is hungry.  So be patient don’t try to force little Johnny into a by the clock eating pattern, research suggest that this may lead to weight problems later on.

So if Johnny doesn’t want to eat when you eat, let him play with that new gift basket of that was was filled to overflowing with all those unique baby boy gifts

Be A Good Spouse

Its been said that the best gift a man can give his children is to love their mother.

It should be obvious to all that the way we treat our mate has a direct relationship to the values our children gain in life.  If we yell and scream or use physical violence with each other, we teach our children that this is the way to get what we want in life.  If we show love and respect within the marriage arrangement, our children will value the family arrangement.  And the home becomes a safe haven in a often dark and scary world.

This is not to say that material presents are not important.  Such can teach children the value of sharing what we have with others.  From an early age let your children know that the baby gifts they receive are given with love and affection.

Babies have a secret that they pass on to each other in the maternity ward.  “Hey there.  Yea, you, the one-hour-old new kid on the block.  Know this, more whines equals more hugs!”  Studies show that babies who cry more at 2 weeks old are held more at 5 weeks old.  So babies know what they want, and they know how to get it.  Babies love to be held.  But we can’t hold them all of the time.  Don’t feel guilty about that.  Let Baby have one of the plush stuffed animals included in the unique baby gift baskets your friends sent to y0u and Baby with kind thoughts and love.

Strollers and escalators

baby stroller

Lucy was eager to take her newborn baby to work so as to show her off.  Fortunately, Lucy was nervous about riding the commuter train, so her parents went with her.  The train station escalator–or any escalator, for that matter–was not stroller-friendly.  Lucy relates the experience like this:  “At the top of the escalator I raised the wheels, then put them down.  But I missed the landing area at the top of the escalator and hit the edge of the metal lip.  The stroller began to flip end over end, fortunately, my dad was in the right place at the right time and was able to grab the stroller and keep it upright.”  Lucy still cringes about that incident. Now Lucy always takes the time to look for the elevator, even if it’s inconvenient.

Both the front and back wheels of a stroller can not be accommodated on the narrow steps of an escalator, making them easy to flip over.  Also, when mom is holding on to the stroller on the escalator, she can’t hold on the the handrail, making it more likely she will loose her balance.

If there’s no elevator available, fold your stroller and have someone else carry it. If you and your baby are alone, ask an attendant to assist you.

Always take a few extra moments to be safe, and enjoy those outings with your baby.  And always be grateful for the baby gifts received from friends and family members.

BPA

Today the American Medical Association released a study suggesting concern about bisphenol A— or BPA.  After surveying almost 1500 adults, the AMA found that those individuals exposed to BPA were more likely to have heart disease and diabetes.  Shortly afterward, the FDA defended its position that BPA is safe.  No doubt about it, the debate will continue for years to come. “Right now, our tentative conclusion is that it’s safe, so we’re not recommending any change in habits,” Laura Tarantino, head of the FDA’s office of food additive safety, said. At the same time, however, she acknowledged, “there are a number of things people can do to lower their exposure.”

One of her recommendations was previously recommended on this web site; avoid plastic bottles with the number 7 in the recycle triangle.  About 90 percent of Americans have traces of BPA in their bodies. The FDA claims the levels of exposure are too low to pose a health risk, even in infants and children.

Read all information available about this chemical and make your own decisions about buying products containing it.  And you can be assured that, regardless of your opinions about BPA, these baby gifts are all safe and non-toxic.

How babies learn their first words

Babies and teenagers have something in common.  They don’t care what their parents say.  While it’s true that babies are learning words as early as 10 months old, they learn the names of objects that interests them rather than what interests the parents.  And they learn those names fast. In at least one study, infants were able to learn five new words in five minutes.  They did this with only  five presentations  of the word and object.  But, they paired the new word with the object that interested them rather than the object the  researcher referred to.  So babies believe that the word spoken to them goes with the object they are most interested in, and not necessarily the object that word accurately describes.

This is not surprising to the researchers. Interest is what drives learning for all of us.  Some six-year-olds were once heard talking knowledgeable about baseball averages.  How can they do that?  I didn’t learn about decimals until 6th or 7th grade.

A ten-month-old infant just “glues” a name onto the most interesting thing they see.  Then, at around 18 months old, the baby learns to discern the speaker’s interest as a guide as to what words describe what objects.

Enjoy those babies while they are babies.  And remember to send a thank-you card for all the baby gifts you and they receive from friends and family.

August- baby month?

I was looking for an article about babies and hurricanes. As I was curious to see how they effect babies.  I found a small piece about  barometric pressure and  how it can effect a baby. I  found a article that was even more interesting.  August and September which tend to be very active hurricane months is also the months in which more babies are born in the United States.  From 1990 to 2002 August was the month most babies were born in except for 1992,1993,1997 and 1998 when July was the month for babies. September averaged the most births per day over that same period 1990- 2002. I also found this interesting the most common day a baby is born on is Tuesdays and the least common is the weekends, because nowadays doctors tend to schedule births and like to  keep their weekends clear.

What ever the month or day you baby is born- that luxury terry bath robe that has your little ones initials on it is perfect to wrap them up in after a bath they look so cute and smell oh so good.

Helping with Baby

gifts for a baby boy

I think that the presents that we get for her should be ones that she will readily use in the coming years.  The gifts for a baby boy have to match what she wants him to have to develop into a special man.  When it comes time to plan the shower, I will suggest some utility gifts for everyone so that Sarah can have the best help her friends can give her.

I am so lucky to be a part of this amazing experience.  Sarah is glowing like a shiny pig and it is beautiful.  I want her to have the best possible pregnancy experience.
